Christmas Open Houses

A number of Open Houses are being held this month at Oxford County Library branches, to share goodwill and tasty treats with the community. In spite of the nasty weather, a steady stream of people have come out.

I always enjoy opportunities to spend some time in the branches.   On cold winter nights, our bright, welcoming libraries are a cosy, friendly place to be.

Tonight is the Christmas Potluck and Open House at the Harrington Community Hall, hosted by the Community Club. Our Harrington library branch is in the lower level of the Hall.  I’m looking forward to it.

Next Wednesday, Dec. 22, Princeton Library will host an Open House from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8:30.

Last night, Tavistock Library hosted an Open House. There were refreshments, crafts for the children, popcorn (made in our new theatre-style popcorn machine), and a door prize.  The place looked lovely. It was the first time since we opened in the new location that I’d been there at night. The light shining from the big windows was a welcoming beacon  on the main street — how fortunate we are to have such a great location. I hear that comment all the time, including several times last night.

Storytime in the Fiction Lounge

In this photo, Branch Supervisor Deb Schurink reads a story to our visitors. They are sitting on a new quilt, made by a group of local women, for the use of the Books for Babies program at the library. Notice our beautiful French Regulator grandfather clock — a gift from David Stock, in memory of his grandfather, Valentine Stock.  Any day now, we expect delivery of the new Fiction Lounge furniture.

Here’s a shot of “Mikey’s Room”, the children’s area in the Tavistock Library, funded by a bequest from the Milan “Mike” Yarich Estate.  Mike was the last owner of the Oxford Hotel. I would think that he would be pleased to see what a vibrant, well-used space his donation provided, and how his hotel has found a new life as a community place.

Our new Tavistock Library

Posted on October 22, 2010. Filed under: Library News | Tags: |

Our new location opened in mid-August, and we held an Open House on Saturday, October 2. Well over 100 people visited the library that day, some for the first time.

This week is Ontario Public Libraries Week, and OCL has much to celebrate, not least of which is our new Tavistock location.  Thanks to the community for its generous support. Thanks for Dave and Kim Piggott for so lovingly restoring such a beautiful old building, and providing us with such a warm, light-filled space. Thanks to our OCL staff and the County of Oxford Public Works staff for their efforts over the past year.

Tavistock is the first of our branches to move towards a more retail-style approach to book display. Eric Skinner of Art & Function Design of Tavistock has provided fabulous steel and wood collection signage, and I look forward to spreading this approach to some of our other branches over the next couple of years.
